What Is Cellulite?

It’s no secret that many people experience cellulite on their bodies. Cellulite is a skin condition where the body can end up with lumpy, dimpled flesh on thighs, hips, abdomen, and buttocks. Many people believe that cellulite is just ordinary excess fat.

The truth is, while cellulite does contain fat, it doesn’t have the type of fat that you can simply eradicate through regular exercising and dieting. With that in mind, how can you get rid of unwanted cellulite?

At Physician Skin Solutions, Dr. Shannon Maltais offers Qwo®, the country’s first FDA-approved injectable cosmetic solution that specifically tackles cellulite. Find out more below about what causes cellulite and how you can treat it.

What Causes Cellulite?

The medical community doesn’t fully know what causes cellulite. All that’s known so far is that it’s most prevalent in women and involves fibrous tissue that tethers the skin to the underlying muscle, with excessive fat cells present between them.

When fat cells accumulate, they cause the appearance of dimpled skin. One fact that is known about a likely source of cellulite are hormonal factors. Also, genetics can play a part in the development of cellulite.

For some people, weight and muscle tone can influence the accumulation of cellulite, although even physically fit people can end up with cellulite too.

How to Treat Cellulite

Cellulite isn’t something that you can simply eradicate through regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet.

The good news is many cosmetic treatment options can diminish the appearance of cellulite. Qwo® is a powerful injectable cellulite-busting solution that contains collagenase, an enzyme that targets collagen types I and III.

Those two collagen types make up the septae – the fibrous tissue that connects skin to the underlying muscles. The idea is Qwo® relaxes this fibrous tissue and stimulates collagen production to thicken and firm up the tissue.

The result is a more uniform skin appearance in the affected areas.

Benefits of Qwo® Treatments

The main benefit of Qwo® treatments is how minimally invasive they are . There is no surgery involved, nor is there the use of any anesthesia.

Dr. Maltais marks your skin during each treatment session to create a “map” of the ideal placement of each injection. The treatment gets delivered through ultra-fine needles that target specific depths to reach the cellulite and provide optimal results.

Another advantage of Qwo® is the fact there’s virtually no downtime. Some patients may experience bruising at the injection sites, but that usually resolves itself in a few days.

Most patients achieve the best results from Qwo® over three 30-minute treatment sessions, scheduled 3-4 weeks apart.

Am I a Candidate for Qwo® Cellulite Treatments?

You could be a candidate for Qwo® cellulite treatments if you have cellulite on your thighs, hips, abdomen, or buttocks. Candidates should also lead a healthy lifestyle, be at or near their target weight, and have realistic expectations.
