Well the simple answer is yes – to BOTH. They are different and you should care – so you can prevent and possibly reverse them.
When talking about aging and facial treatments, lines and wrinkles are often lumped into the same troublesome bucket. The truth is, they are quite different and with proper treatment and an ounce of prevention you can keep a line from turning into a wrinkle and possibly even reverse a wrinkle into a line!
First, lines – so what are they?
A line is small and fine and tends to be caused by repeated muscle movement – or simply having facial expxressions. Smiling, frowning, and squinting frequently will cause lines over time as your skin ages and loses elasticity and the ability to “snap back” as it does when we are young.
You will frequently find lines around at the side of the mouth, between your brows, underneath and around the corner of your eyes, on the forehead and cheeks.
And our favorite – wrinkles!
Wrinkles are defined as noticeable creases or folds in the skin and are more dramatic in nature than lines. While aging, loss of collagen and elastin can cause wrinkles (just like lines), sun exposure, certain medications, smoking, and dehydrated skin are also contributing factors.
Wrinkles are found anywhere on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands – YAY they have everything covered (read with heavy note of sarcasm)!
The turning point
If left untreated, lines will turn into wrinkles eventually with the further breakdown of collagen. The good news is that if treated lines will remain fine lines and even reverse and wrinkles can be reduced to lines with proper treatment.
So what do you do?
Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do everyday to help:
- Use a good moisturizer and sunscreen daily
- Stay hydrated
- Don’t smoke
There are numerous laser, injectable and aesthetic treatments that can help in the battle too!
